Ushahidi
It's 2008, in the midst of a controversial Kenyan election that erupts in violence, millions of Kenyans have no way of knowing what's happening on the ground or how to stay safe. A local blogger's clarion call reaches tech savvy people willing to develop a platform that allows citizens to verifiably report and pin where violence is occurring to keep people safe. Over 40,000 reports later, Ushahidi – meaning "testimony" in Swahili – is born. Over the next ten years, Ushahidi evolves into a fully realized platform used more than 150,000 times in over 160 countries, crowdsourcing more than 50 million reports from around the world. Now a social enterprise with a global team of 30+ highly-skilled and diverse experts, they wanted to celebrate their first ten years by telling their inception story, expressing the urgency and importance of the work they do, and demonstrating their evolution beyond political unrest into broader issues like natural disasters, human rights abuses, corruption, harassment and violence towards women. This impact report document was produced in a single-page format to allow the Ushahidi team to customize the document on the fly, depending on the audience they were speaking to, and as a source of promotional tools featuring data visualizations and the compelling case studies they needed when called upon. It features their story of origin, simplified data visuals of how the platform works, examples of the platform's many successful applications throughout the world with supportive data points, and concludes with their expressed vision for the future of the platform and the organization.
